Why the combined tax document matters
Kraken may present federal information returns through a combined tax-document experience. Confirm which form and tax year you are reviewing rather than assuming every number in the package is Form 1099-DA activity. Kraken’s support guidance also directs users to underlying Tax Center data connected with its forms.
Records to gather
- The complete combined tax document and any amendment
- Ledger export covering the full tax year
- Trades and conversions
- Deposits and withdrawals
- Original acquisition records for assets deposited from elsewhere
- Wallet transaction hashes for self-custody transfers
- Tax software import summary and warnings
Kraken review workflow
- Identify the disposal. Match the reported item to Kraken’s transaction or ledger history.
- Confirm the proceeds question. Determine whether the disagreement concerns the sale value or missing basis.
- Trace deposits. For assets received from another exchange or wallet, locate the corresponding send record.
- Locate acquisition evidence. Find the original buy, date, amount, price and fees.
- Review software classification. Confirm that transfers were not duplicated or misclassified.
Worked record example
You purchase an asset on another platform, transfer it into Kraken and later sell it there. Kraken’s records can support the deposit and sale. The original platform supports the purchase, and an intervening wallet may support the transfer path. A reliable record package connects all three rather than treating the Kraken deposit as a new acquisition.
| Stage | Evidence | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Original acquisition | Trade confirmation and fee record | When and how was the asset acquired? |
| Transfer out | Withdrawal and transaction hash | Did the same asset leave the source? |
| Kraken deposit | Deposit and ledger record | Did it arrive in Kraken? |
| Kraken disposal | Trade and tax record | What event generated reported proceeds? |
If Kraken issued an amended form
Retain both the original and amended documents, note when each was received and update the record package shared with software or a preparer. Do not assume an earlier import will refresh automatically. Reconcile the changed items explicitly.
When to contact Kraken
Contact support when you can name the form, field or transaction that does not match Kraken’s own underlying records, or when you received a form you believe should not have been issued. Provide non-sensitive evidence and keep the case number and responses.
