Robinhood Crypto 1099-DA: review Tax Center records

Compare the form with Robinhood’s underlying crypto activity and any evidence held outside the platform.

Direct answer: Review the Form 1099-DA alongside Robinhood’s tax documents and crypto transaction history. If the crypto entered Robinhood from an outside wallet or platform, reconstruct the original acquisition and transfer trail before treating absent basis as an issuer error.

Three Robinhood record situations

SituationWhere evidence may sitMain question
Bought and sold inside RobinhoodRobinhood transaction historyDo the disposal records align?
Transferred into RobinhoodSource exchange or wallet plus Robinhood depositCan the original acquisition be connected?
Transferred out before sale elsewhereRobinhood withdrawal plus destination historyIs the same movement classified consistently?

Records to gather

Do not confuse an outside transfer with a new purchase

When crypto is deposited from outside Robinhood, the deposit record may not show the entire history of how and when the asset was originally acquired. A record review should connect the outside withdrawal and blockchain transaction with the Robinhood receipt. The appropriate tax treatment depends on the underlying facts and is outside this educational guide.

When the displayed gain looks unexpectedly high

First separate a software-calculated gain from the gross proceeds reported on the form. Then ask:

  1. Is the original acquisition imported?
  2. Did Robinhood receive the asset from outside?
  3. Was an own-wallet transfer classified as a disposal?
  4. Is the same account imported twice?
  5. Does a corrected document exist?

A large gain can be accurate. It can also reflect incomplete acquisition data. The records—not the size of the number—determine the next review step.

What to send support

If Robinhood’s form differs from Robinhood’s own underlying record, identify the transaction, date, asset, quantity and amounts. Ask for explanation or review. Never send credentials, passwords, seed phrases or private keys.
