Coinbase 1099-DA: Missing Cost Basis & High Proceeds (2026)

Answer the questions people search when the Coinbase form looks wrong: where it is, why proceeds look high, why basis is missing, and what evidence to gather.

Direct answer: A high Coinbase 1099-DA proceeds total is not the same thing as profit or tax owed. For 2025 transactions, Coinbase says the form reports proceeds and not cost basis. If crypto was acquired elsewhere or moved through another wallet, the missing piece may be acquisition history that Coinbase never had.

Will Coinbase send me a 1099-DA—and where do I find it?

Coinbase’s current help page says U.S. customers receive Form 1099-DA for reportable sales or exchanges. For tax year 2025, Coinbase says it would provide the form no later than March 17, 2026 and email customers when it was ready. Use the current Taxes area in your account rather than relying on old screenshots.

When does Coinbase send a 1099-DA?

For tax year 2025, Coinbase’s current help page says the Form 1099-DA would be available no later than March 17, 2026, with an email when it was ready. For future tax years, use Coinbase’s current help page rather than assuming the same date.

How do I get my 1099-DA from Coinbase?

Open the current Taxes area in your Coinbase account and download the available tax form. If the interface has changed, use Coinbase Help for the current path. Save the PDF you used for filing together with the transaction export.

Why can gross proceeds look much higher than what I “made”?

Coinbase defines gross proceeds as the cumulative amount received from asset dispositions. Multiple sales or crypto-to-crypto exchanges can make that number large. Gross proceeds are not net gain, account balance, or your final tax bill.

One rule before you do anything

Do not invent cost basis to make the number look right. Reconstruct the original acquisition and transfer trail from records.

Why is my Coinbase cost basis blank or noncovered?

For 2025, Coinbase says its 1099-DA reports proceeds only. For 2026 transactions, Coinbase reports basis for certain covered assets. Coinbase describes transferred-in crypto from an outside wallet or exchange as noncovered because it does not possess the original purchase records.

The record trail to rebuild

  1. Download the 1099-DA currently shown in Coinbase Taxes.
  2. Export the complete transaction/activity history for the tax year.
  3. Mark every disposal that contributes to proceeds.
  4. For transferred-in assets, locate the sending exchange/wallet record.
  5. Find the original acquisition date, purchase amount and relevant fees.
  6. Match wallet withdrawals/deposits by asset, quantity, time and transaction hash where available.
  7. Review tax-software imports for duplicates or transfers misclassified as income/disposals.

What if the proceeds themselves are wrong?

That is a different problem from missing basis. Compare the form with Coinbase’s transaction-level disposal history. Identify the exact date, asset, quantity and USD amount that differs, then contact Coinbase Support with the evidence. Do not frame a basis gap as proof the proceeds line is incorrect.
